In 1888 R. Gershon H. Leiner, the Radzyner Rebbe, announced that he had rediscovered the “Chilazon”, which is the marine animal described in the Talmud as the only true source of tekhelet. As a result of this announcement and the Rebbe’s research, over 10,000 Chassidic Jews began wearing the blue thread in their tzitzith again after about 1,500 years of its being “lost”. Made of the dark ink of the Cuttlefish, a relative of the squid, this beautiful blue dye is still believed by many to be the original biblical tekhelet and is again being made in eretz Yisrael.
